SUSANNE BACH LTDA., established officially since 1949, is the largest and oldest bookstore in Brazil exporting research and teaching level books, worldwide.
SUSANNE BACH LTDA supplies books and periodicals (rare, in-print, o.p.) and all types of publications, including technical, scientific, medical, legal, art, iconographic/photographic and popular materials published in Brazil, Portugal and Luso- Africa to universities, libraries, institutes, museums, scholars, and the book trade worldwide.
We work with commercial, institutional, governmental and universities publishers throughout the country. Small presses, Art publishers and non-commercial publishers are also part of our coverage. Our aim is to offer materials and services of the highest quality, taylored to the particular needs of our clients. We serve both large and small intuitions, as well individual customers.
Who we are
Dr. Susanne Eisenberg-Bach (1907-1997)
Founder and Director from 1949 to 1984. Ph.D. in Philology, University of Munich, a writer and book-seller in Paris before the war and a refugee in Brazil after the German invasion of France, arriving in Brazil in 1941. She was the first dealer to export Brazilian research materials to European and American University libraries and established standards for this kind of trade in Brazil. She also was the 1rst to collect exile –literature in Brazil. Her collection is now in the Deutsche Bibliothek of Frankfurt a.m.
Vera L. de Araujo-Haugse
Commercial Director from 1984, B.A., and M.A. in Romance Languages, University of Oregon and Ph.D. Candidate in Comparative Literature at UCLA. She trained in Latin American Bibliography at UCLA, under the Latin American bibliographer and Director of the Latin American Center, Dr. Ludwig Lauerhass Jr. Together they published Education in Latin America: A Bibliography. (Los Angeles: University of California, UCLA Latin American Center Publications, 1980, 431 p.). She also worked as a translator and interpreter for various publishers, journals and companies in Brazil and the USA. Vera joined the firm in 1984.
Sandra Soares
Graduate in Librarianship and Information Sciences. She has worked in the field for decades and in several Brazilian libraries. She was introduced to booktrading in 1987 through her work at Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa in Brazil which had a network of about 85 libraries throughout the country. Later she became a cataloger of the same institution. She joined Susanne Bach in 2000 and became a partner in 2008. Today Sandra is in charge of daily management of the company .

Raphael Bacellar
Administrative Director / Business Development, from 2010 to 2014.
B.A. Industrial Design, M.A. and Ph.D. in Engineering, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Raphael joined the firm in 2010 and is now in charge of Luso-African and Portuguese publications, working out of Portugal. He travels extensively in Africa in pursue of collection materials.
Carlos A. de Araujo Shellard
Carlos A. de Araujo Shellard has a Double B.A., M.A. in Literature and Culture from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. He joined the firm in 2004, as a student, and permanently, in 2014, and is currently responsible for selecting content for Approval Plans and Blankets. He has travelled extensively in the Americas, Asia, Europe, Northern and Eastern Africa.
Maria Lucia Oliveira
B. S. in Psychology and Education from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Malu joined Susanne Bach in 2000, her first job after graduating.
She worked in all sections of the bookstore, originally with Periodicals and Serials, then with Acquisitions, and finally with the Approval/Blanket Orders dept., where she has excelled since 2004. She is very meticulous, very organized, loves reading and speaks perfect English.
